A Co-op operates according to seven basic principles
- Open Membership: Membership in a Co-op is voluntary and open to anyone regardless of race, sex, religion, political affiliation, sexual orientation, or social standing.
- Democratic Control: A Co-op is operated under the principle of one person, one vote.
- Limited Return on Investment: Capitalization in the cooperative earns little or no interest. This avoids speculation.
- Return of Profits to Members: Profits are reinvested in the Co-op so it can better serve its members.
- Continuous Education: Members learn the techniques and principles of cooperation and pass the word along.
- Cooperation Among Co-ops: Co-ops actively support other cooperatives at the local, regional, state, national, and international levels.
- Concern for the Community: Cooperatives work for the sustainable development of their communities through policies accepted by their members.
